Understanding Dehumidification in HVAC Systems

1.     Airflow Through Cooling Coils

○      Moist air enters the air handler and passes over a fin-and-tube evaporator coil, where it is rapidly cooled below the dew point.

○      The refrigeration cycle lowers the air temperature ideally to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, reducing its capacity to retain moisture.

2.     Condensation & Latent Heat Removal

○      When air cools below its dew point temperature (Tdp), water vapor condenses on the coil surface and is collected in a drain pan.

○      This phase change releases latent heat, absorbed by the refrigerant and cycled away to the condenser.

3.     Reheat & Air Distribution

○      This process allows the system to stay in operation to remove the grains of moisture.

○      In some systems, reheating may be used to prevent overcooling, ensuring the air remains comfortable while maintaining low humidity levels.

○      The dehumidified air is distributed throughout space, creating a healthier indoor environment.
